Cremation cost
How much does cremation cost in Massachusetts?
Updated · 5 cited sources
There is no single Massachusetts cremation price. Most families compare the direct cremation line on each funeral home's general price list (GPL): cremation without a viewing or ceremony at the home. What that line includes differs from home to home, so the number is a starting point, not the total.
What Massachusetts funeral homes post
Across 39 Massachusetts funeral homes with a posted, sourced direct-cremation line, the lowest such line at each home runs from $1,495 to $5,265. The middle home posts $3,295, and half of the homes fall between $2,540 and $4,000.
| Funeral homes | Lowest | Lower quarter | Middle | Upper quarter | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 39 | $1,495 | $2,540 | $3,295 | $4,000 | $5,265 |
How to read this: one figure per home (its lowest posted direct-cremation line), and every figure is a price a home actually printed. It is not an average or an estimate. The price lists behind it carry effective dates from 2020 to 2026, so some are older than others. The Pass shows each home's line with its source and date.
Charges that can sit outside the direct-cremation line
- The crematory. Some homes include it; others list it as a separate line or a cash advance. On file, 11 funeral homes post a separate crematory line, from $300 to $495.
- The medical examiner's certificate. Massachusetts requires one before any cremation[2]. The fee is set under state law and paid by the person who receives the certificate[3]. Ask whether the home's line includes it.
- Death certificate copies. Certified copies come from the clerk of the city or town where the death occurred [5]. Clerks set their own fees.
- The container and urn. You can use an alternative container instead of a casket, and you can supply your own urn [1]. Massachusetts crematories require a rigid container [4].
- A cemetery, if the ashes will be buried or placed in a niche. That is a separate cemetery bill. See cemetery fees.
- Transfer distance. Many lines cover a set radius; mileage beyond it is extra.
Timing rules that affect the bill
Massachusetts does not allow cremation within 48 hours of death unless the person died of a contagious or infectious disease [2]. Embalming is not required for cremation; refrigeration is the usual alternative while you wait [4]. Ask how the home charges for refrigeration.
How to compare homes fairly
- Ask each home for its GPL, or ask for prices by phone. You do not have to give your name [1].
- Check what the direct-cremation line includes: crematory, container, medical examiner, transfer radius.
- Add the items that are outside the line, so every home is compared on the same basis.
- Check the date on the price list. An older list may have changed.
