Burial vs cremation

Burial vs cremation cost in Massachusetts

Updated · 5 cited sources

The two simplest choices on a funeral home's general price list are direct cremation and immediate burial: each without a viewing or ceremony at the home. Comparing those two lines is the fairest like-for-like start. The bigger difference usually comes after: burial needs a cemetery, and the cemetery bills separately.

The funeral-home part, as posted

For each line, Arrangement File takes one figure per funeral home (its lowest posted, sourced line of that type). Every figure below is a price a home actually printed, not an average.

Posted funeral-home lines on file
LineHomesLowestMiddleMiddle halfHighest
Direct cremation39$1,495$3,295$2,540–$4,000$5,265
Immediate burial34$1,795$3,860$2,995–$5,390$6,320
Basic services45$1,195$2,975$2,195–$3,850$5,995

Price lists behind these figures are dated 2020 to 2026. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a home's fee for basic services of the funeral director and staff is already included in its direct-cremation and immediate-burial prices [5]. It is added on its own when you choose a funeral with a viewing or ceremony.

What burial adds: the cemetery bill

In Massachusetts, cemeteries are separate from funeral homes [2]. A burial usually involves:

On file, 42 cemeteries post lot or grave prices, 36 post opening-and-closing charges, and 13 post a liner or outer-container price. Arrangement File does not reduce these to one range: they depend on residency, section, casket vs cremains, and day of week, and some rate sheets are much older than others. Read cemetery fees before you compare them.

What cremation can add

If the person was a veteran

Burial in a national cemetery comes with the gravesite, opening and closing, a headstone or marker, and perpetual care at no cost to the family; funeral-home charges are still the family's [4]. See veterans burial in Massachusetts.
