Direct cremation on a GPL is the funeral home’s price for arranging a cremation without a viewing or ceremony at the home. It is the line families use when they want a simple comparison. It is also the line that hides the most omissions.

Questions the printed number may not answer

1. Does it include an alternative container?
2. Does it include the crematory’s own fee?
3. Does it include the Massachusetts medical-examiner cremation review fee?
4. What is the transfer radius?

Massachusetts funeral homes do not own crematories. FCA of Western Massachusetts states this in its 2026 method notes and reports crematory fees in a range in that region. Use their page for that regional study; do not treat it as an Arrangement File statewide fee. Using the price chart.

What this does / does not tell you

Posted GPL structure, not “the cheapest cremation in Massachusetts.” A low advertised package can omit the same items another home prints in the direct-cremation line.

• Is cremation with a memorial the same line?

  No. Rooms, staff, and a ceremony are other GPL items.

• Does the 48-hour wait change the price?

  It can change timing and refrigeration. It does not by itself set the GPL number. See Mass.gov funeral-industry consumer information.
